In architecture, sketching has long symbolized the mark of designerly knowing. When hand, paper and idea converge, an instinctual digestion of spatial knowledge occurs through quasi-conscious gestures, letting lines that embrace forms and encode situated information emerge, making sense of their relationships.
With today’s technologies, we can stretch between the physical and the digital world and get in contact with hybrid materialities. We can enter a 3D model space and touch our sketches and design ideas directly, navigating places in an embodied, multi-sensory way. Within this course, you will learn how to approach an existing site with 3D sketching using a Mixed Reality headset. By shaping and interfacing with the world from within, we will explore materials, objects and spaces beyond representation.
The course will feature a series of situated sketching sessions and a series of technical sessions. Besides on-site spatial drawing, you will also learn how to process your sketches and handle the data using computational tools through Rhino and Grasshopper. We will work with animation, meshes and presentation plug-ins in the program.
The overall course aim is for each student to develop a set of 3D printed models and drawings which reflect the spatial events on-site, showing your individual approach to the craft of 3D sketching and different possibilities for representation of spatial drawings.
