This design studio aims to explore the untapped potential of rooftops as sites for new infrastructural urban landscapes. Each design project serves a dual purpose: functioning both as an extension to an existing building and as an independent addition. While every design is intended to provide space for housing, we envision the rooftop as a new plane for urban life. This encompasses, on the one hand, experimental forms of living, and on the other, the creation of infrastructure for the commons. In addressing this concept, several questions arise: How can rooftops become public assets? How can they be made accessible? What forms of commons are we envisioning, and how can they benefit the surrounding neighborhood?
Simultaneously, we will explore strategies of preservation, adaptation and transformation. When combined with the idea of providing experimental forms of housing, this will raise important considerations around standards, comfort, and minimal intervention—all with the objective of proposing designs that challenge the current norms and standards of urban development.
The final outcome will be a collective studio atlas, presenting potential interventions that will serve as a foundation for further exploration and discussion.
