Form Workshop

Geometry crafted in Rhino & Grasshopper’s algorithmic 3d-modelling

The workshop focuses on two—and three-dimensional geometry (static, changeable, and kinetic) aided by Rhinoceros and its algorithmic extension Grasshopper. This tool can automatically perform vast real-time modelling tasks and analyse geometric shapes. The workshop is goal-oriented, meaning every participant works on their ideas after the introductory tutorials and lectures.

First, Fredrik will give tutorials on the fundamentals of Grasshopper, including exploring geometry and widely used Grasshopper operations. After the introductory phase, you will present an idea as a sketch and then build it with Grasshopper and Fredrik’s support. The idea is that research for design solutions occurs automatically through the motivation of reaching your goal. The course is about training your skills and is more about the process than the final product.

Ideally, students support their studio projects with Rhino and Grasshopper models. The workshop will also examine how to transfer geometry from Rhino/Grasshopper to Revit, ArchiCad, TwinMotion, and Lumion.

Final submission

February 14th at the latest, create a new folder in your folder called FINAL and upload the following:

  1. The GH file, with any Rhino data internalised. So do not upload the Rhino model if not necessary.
  2. A PDF compilation, 1-5 pages in A4 format, depicting your design and how you wholly or partly made it with Grasshopper. Here you can see some examples: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1guBBrrXXe4COE287GUF9uYnrwqSmjDKt?usp=sharing
  3. In PNG or JPG format, a 1500px wide image depicting your final result (only one shot), labelled with your name and FORM WORKSHOP / www.formworkshop.net.
