Previously, he has been a researcher affiliated to the City Sciences team at MIT Media Lab in Cambridge; a member of the Knowledge & Innovation Branch at UN-HABITAT in Nairobi; Visiting Faculty of Architectural History at CEPT University in Ahmedabad; and Curator at CultureNOW’s Museum Without Walls in New York.
Karan received a Master in Design Studies with Distinction from Harvard University Graduate School of Design. He was awarded the Gerald M. McCue (Gold) Medal, the Best Thesis Prize, and research grants from the South Asia Institute and the Joint Center for Housing Studies. He has also been the recipient of the India Design Leadership Fellowship, the Paul M. Heffernan Award, and the Annual Research & Development Award. He holds a Bachelor of Architecture degree from University School of Architecture & Planning, New Delhi.
His current research focuses on the articulation of heritage in post-liberalization India, and its impact on social identity and nation-building processes.
