Bamboo and Beyond - A Community for Flood Survivors, Pakistan

Bamboo and Beyond - A Community for Flood Survivors, Pakistan

In response to the challenges faced by communities in flood-affected areas, my design proposal offers a solution that addresses the urgent need for temporary shelter and housing in Pakistan. By utilizing locally available materials like mud, bamboo, and lime, the design aims to create resilient and easily constructed structures while promoting community empowerment and self-sufficiency. This innovative design serves as an emergency shelter, providing a safe haven for individuals and families whose villages and houses have been submerged by floodwaters. Its primary objective is to offer a reliable refuge where people can seek shelter and find comfort during the crisis. Strategically positioned for easy accessibility, the structure ensures that those affected can reach it amidst their temporary displacement.

By restoring a sense of normalcy and fostering community cohesion amidst the chaos and uncertainty brought by the flood, the design aims to uplift and empower the affected communities.

Phase -1 The Base

The design proposal consists of two phases. The first phase, known as the Base, utilizes modular construction methods and incorporates amenities such as basic healthcare, registration rooms, and administration facilities.

Phase -2 The Transition and Rehabilitation

The second phase, called the Transition and Rehabilitation, maintains the core design principles while utilizing sustainable local materials like bamboo, mud, and lime. This phase includes the construction of rooms and community spaces, further supporting the recovery and rebuilding process.
