„behind every door is a unique world waiting, give it space and watch them overflow and collide.

Confronting the monolithic facades of Berlin’s Plattenbau blocks. This project is a rejection of their isolating uniformity. It acts as an architectural catalyst, pulling private, hidden worlds out from behind closed windows, transforming standardized concrete into a vibrant framework where communal life can naturally take root.

Berlin deserves a living architecture, a testament to the messy, vibrant realities and the diverse, shifting characters of its residents.

When contained, these spaces house isolated routines; when spilled into the open, they become a connected community. Aligning with the everyday objects, habits, and traces of life that actively defy and redefine these highly standardized blocks.

“the concrete no longer contains, it yields. leaving a place to breathe and build - creating the confluence of small worlds„

Deconstructing Spatial Context

By analyzing how residents in Berlin’s standardized Plattenbau housing personalize their spaces with everyday objects like drafting tables and planters, it becomes clear that architecture should not impose a singular, rigid way of living. Instead of designing forced interventions that dictate how people inhabit a space, architecture must step back and act as a flexible host that supports the messy, active reality of daily routines. By focusing on the physical behaviors of making, gathering, and care, designers can build adaptable frameworks that empower individuals to create, overlap, and collide their own unique personal worlds within a standardized concrete structure.

Tracing and Designing Collisions

Originally built for rapid mass housing, Plattenbau blocks provide basic shelter but severely lack the shared spaces necessary for community building. As younger demographics move in—prioritizing communal areas over large private apartments—the demand for safe, maintained public spaces has become urgent. Movement mapping across the site reveals that while social overlap occurs naturally in broader public zones, the enclosed, rigid layout of the residential blocks isolates people as they move in and out of their private units. To adapt to these shifting needs and break up the monolithic architecture, spatial strategies must focus on activating residual spaces to foster connection and better support shared, everyday life.

Carving Voids, Unpacking the Floor Plan

To overcome the rigid layout of standard Plattenbau blocks that confines social activity to private living rooms, structural interventions can carve double-volume voids into the concrete floor plates and attach expansive shared balconies to the exterior. By opening up narrow corridors and breaking down opaque walls, these additions and subtractions rewrite the building's space syntax to establish a vital new middle ground. This physical shift allows personal objects and daily habits to safely spill out from tightly boxed-in apartments into shared communal zones. Ultimately, this enables individual worlds to physically merge and neighbors to naturally gather, while simultaneously displaying a vibrant layer of human activity on the facade that visually connects the residents inside with the public realm below.
