A pilot project that corresponds to the master thesis research on activating and inhabiting urban parking lots, using Berlin as a city for demonstration.
With the increasing shift towards shared mobility, the project highlights parking lots as newfound spatial resources in the context of a fast-growing city, at the same time addressing the adversities caused by these monofunctional asphalt sites to the climate and the environment.
The core idea is to deseal and liberate existing surface car parks with stacked ones, but the planning and construction of these new vertical repositories will be revisited to enable their future conversions into spaces for living, sports, culture, learning and/or productivity. The submitted proposal examines how this will work with housing: the freed parking lots next to IKEA and Bauhaus in Tempelhof will be transformed into wetlands, parks, gardens and farm, which will in turn provide quality green spaces for the dwellings and the city.
