Branching Stadtmitte: An Urban Connector

Branching Stadtmitte: An Urban Connector

The urban design project focuses on Berlin Stadtmitte and its immediate surroundings. Friedrichstraße, a significant axis containing luxury shops, restaurants, cafes, and cultural buildings, is a key point of consideration. This axis also carries considerable historical significance. Despite repeated attempts to close it to traffic, no successful outcome has been achieved.

This project proposes a detailed analysis of this crucial area and its immediate surroundings. The goal is to generate new design elements inspired by the Banyan Tree, enhancing the spatial relationships within these areas. The New York High Line project serves as a reference for designing the relationship between the ground and the green area.

The banyan tree naturally produces new branches over time. As these branches reach the ground and take root, they become small trunks, ultimately making the main trunk stronger.

CO - Correlation and Branching Strategy

This natural phenomenon served as inspiration to create a metaphorical relationship between Berlin and the banyan tree. In this analogy, the inner city of Berlin represents the trunk, while the streets that have formed over time are seen as branches.

The design aims to strengthen these streets relationally. In this context, the idea of generating new branches and having them serve specific purposes in order to strengthen the relationship was envisioned.
